Catalogue Note

Both members of the American expatriate community of writers and artists in 1930s Paris, Man Ray and Henry Miller would not meet until the 1940s when they were both living in California. Miller remembered that Man Ray "was a kind, gentle soul, sophisticated indeed, but affable, cordial and thoroughly sincere ... I warmed to him immediately, and from an acquaintance became a friend ... an extremely fertile mind, his imagination is always at work, always creating new relationships of a surprising kind." (Henry Miller, Recollections of Man Ray in Hollywood, quoted in Schwarz, 1977, p. 321)

Curiously there exists no formal photographic portrait of Miller by Man Ray despite their close friendship. So Man Ray made t⛦he present enlargement cropped from a group portrait with Man Ray and the Neiman family outside Miller's cabin at Big Sur, explaining why this widely-published image does not display a sharp focus. Accompanying this work is a second photograph made at Big Sur, a view from inside the cabin showing Miller sitting at a table with Juliet, Margaret Neiman and her daughter and Man Ray standing by the doorway in the half-light.
