Catalogue Note

The present photograph is a fine example of a solarized portrait. Man Ray chose it for inclusion his in 1963 album of portraits (Man Ray Portrait, 1963), describing the image as a subject "to enable me to recover my process of solarization, abandoned for some years." According to an inscription on the verso of another print of this image (Cologne, 2008, p. 66), the sitter is Jacqueline Duhême, who in the 1940s was a friend of Paul Eluard and worked as an assistant for Henri Matisse.
