Catalogue Note

During his summer journeys to the South of France in 1936 and 1937, Man Ray extensively photographed the monuments and landscapes he visited. Some of these images inspired other works: the towers of the Château d'Angers became Les Tours du silence, a 1936 drawing published in 1937 in Les Mains libres, and served for a series of 1938 drawings titled Les Tours jumelles (a play on words between twin towers and the word for binoculars), while the unidentified castle inspired a 1938 ink drawing, La Tour fendue (The Israel Museum, Jerusalem).
