Catalogue Note

The Château de Lacoste in the Vaucluse was one of the homes of the Marquis de Sade. Man Ray visited in 1936, extensively photographing the ruined castle and its surroundings, and that year he made his first imagined portrait of the "Divin Marquis".

Sade stayed there from 1769 to 1772, between the scandals at Arcueil and Marseille, and again prior to his first incarceration in the Château de Vincennes in 1777. After h💯e escaped, he again took refuge there for the last time f🃏rom 16 July to 7 September 1778 before being returned to Vincennes.
