Catalogue Note
"Complete, absolute liberty – that is what Man Ray waxed fervid and eloquent about in describing Sade's view of life. Total liberty! This was, and is, Man Ray's religion." (Henry Miller, quoted in Schwarz, 1977, p. 322)
Man Ray made a series of imaginary portraits of the Marquis de Sade, recorded in his own photographs that co⛎mprise the present lot. No lifetime portrait of Sade existed, so Man Ray was at liberty to create an ideological portrait of the writ🎀er, without constraint of likeness. In his two drawings and two paintings, executed from 1936 to 1940, Man Ray depicted Sade as a carved bust before the Bastille where he had been incarcerated, both apparently made of same stone blocks.
