Catalogue Note

Duchamp's painting on glass Neuf Moules Mâlic (Nine Malic Moulds, 1914-15, Centre Pompidou, Paris) was one his numerous iconic works photographed by Man Ray at Duchamp's request. Shortly after its completion, the glass of Neuf Moules Mâlic cracked in 1916, prefiguring the fate of Duchamp's La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, meme, broken in 1920s and Man Ray's Dancer/Danger. In both instances, the artists recognised and accepted the damage as a new aspect of the work and these works remain as celebrated as ever, in their permanently altered state.
