Catalogue Note

Kiki de Montparnasse (born Alice Prin) was Man Ray’s muse, principal model and companion over the years from 1922 to 1928. A legendary personality, closely associated with the painters and writers of Montparnasse, she worked as a nightclub singer and posed for artists. On the night they met at the café La Rotonde, Man Ray declared to her: “Light can do everything. Light works for me, I make the shadows and I make the light; I can do everything with a camera.” (Baldwin, 1988, p. 106) Kiki frequently featured in Man Ray’s works and appeared in his experimental films. She was immortalized in the artist's iconic photographs Le Violon d’Ingres (1924) and Noire et blanche (1926).
