Catalogue Note

“Augustus John, the English painter, was brought to sit for me. With his wide felt hat and beard he made a very picturesque subject. But he was slightly in his cups that day, his expression was rather stern; when I sent a print to his hotel, I was told he tore it up. Frank Crowninshield of the old Vanity Fair … came upon the portrait of John and stopped in admiration. Never had he seen a face with character so well portrayed. It was forceful and noble, he said.” (Self Portrait, 1988, p. 143)
