Catalogue Note

Charlotte Wolff (1897-1986), a specialist in the study of the human hand, moved to Paris from her native Germany in the 1930s. There she encountered Aldous Huxley who introduced her to the city’s vibrant artistic and literary circles. Her article featuring analyses of the hand prints of Huxley as well as André Breton, Paul Eluard and Marcel Duchamp was published in the Surrealist avant-garde journal Minotaure, (“Les révélations psychiques de la main”, Minotaure, no. 6 (Winter 1935), pp. 38-44), while Man Ray’s own hand print was included in her 1936 book, Studies in Hand-reading, as well as the present photographic portrait.
