Condition
There is a 2cm fissure in the patina at the upper right tip with several smaller fissures and losses. The left sphere is tarnished with minor oxidation marks and there are scattered light surface scratches. There is a light build up of dust in the recesses and some tiny chips to the lower front edge of the base, otherwise this work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note
The original object of this “paperweight” dedicated to Priapus, Greek god of fertility, was assembled in 1920. Replicas were made in the 1960s and 1970s in silver (the present lot), bronze and white marble (lot 233). Presse-papier à Priape “was assembled from three steel balls and a segment of tubing. This was all that was needed to create the striking image of a phallic divinity. [Man Ray said] ‘On looking at the photograph of this object people usually asked me the size of the original. More or like yours was my reply.’” (Schwarz, 1977, p. 159)
