Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work is in beautiful condition. It is on a thick panel which shows no reinforcements on the reverse. There is no instability to the paint layer. There is a faintly visible slightly diagonal wood grain. There is one crack in the wood which runs vertically through the left eye of Christ and down through his cheek which is faintly visible. The gilding in the halo and the orb may well be original. Although there are restorations in the corners and here and there on the extreme edges, the condition of the work is very good. No restorations are visible under ultraviolet light, but there may be some beneath an older varnish. The work could be hung in its current state, but it would respond to a light cleaning.

Catalogue Note
This Salvator Mundi derives from Vittore Carpaccio's early treatments of the subject and may indeed be the product of his workshop. Comparisons can be drawn between this panel and the artist's signed Salvator Mundi with four apostles, in the Contini Bonacossi collection, Florence, showing Christ in a similarly frontal pose.
