Eleanor C🎉oade (1708-1796) founded her Artificial Stone Manufactory in Lambeth in 1769 with her daughter and Daniel Pincot, who had been manufacturing artificial stone for a decade. The Coades' daughter ran the business from about 1771 onwards after her family's partnership with Pincot dissolved.
It is possible that the present figures are two of the four sold from the Estate of William G. Elmslie by O'Reilly's Plaza Art Gallery, New York, on June 4, 1959. That set of figures was acquired by French and Company, Inc., New York, and one from the set, representing Autumn (of the same dimensions) was sold by Chri🐎stie's New York, October 18, 2001, lot 133.
