Catalogue Note

The Mikhailovsky Service was produced between 1819 and 1822 for use at the Mikhailovsky  Palace, the Petersburg residence of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich (1798-1849). The dessert plates are particularly outstanding; the very best figurative painters at the manufactory, including Semen Golov (circa 1783-1849), painter of the offered lot, copied a classically-themed compositions by European painters  on the plates. On the Mikhailovsky Service, see Pod tsarskim venzelem, St. Petersburg, 2007, pp. 128-129.
