Catalogue Note

Emperor Alexander II commissioned this service in 1860 for Prince Alexander Bariatinskii (1815-1879), his childhood friend who had commanded troops during the Crimean War and was subsequently named Viceroy of the Caucasus. In May, 1860 Alexander II commissioned this service as a gift for his boyhood friend, Prince Aleksandr Ivanovich Bariatinskii (1815-1879). Bariatinskii had commanded the Russian troops in the Caucasus during the Crimean War (1854-1855), and in 1856 he became Viceroy of the Caucasus. His military achievements resulted in all of the military honors pictures on the plates of the service. Records indicate the service was completed in 1861, but additions were apparently made.  On this service, see Porcelain: An Imperial Fascination, NY, 1991, no. 269 and Geraldika na russkom farfore, St. Petersburg, 2008, p. 234.
