Catalogue Note

During the Second World War, Russian ceramicists sought inspiration in past Russian military victories.  Konakovo was fortunate in having such designs already in stock, produced sixty years earlier by Nikolai Annenskii, chief sculptor at the Guzhev Manufactory.  Annenskii had continued to work at Guzhev after it was sold to Semen Maslennikov in 1879.  When the factory burned down in 1882, the models were acquired by the nearby Kuznetsov Manufactory, which became the Konakovo Factory and remains in operation today.
