Catalogue Note
An abbreviation of Kommunisticheskii Soyuz Moledyozhi, the youth organisation Komsomol was founded in 1922. Open to young people aged 14 to 28, it fostered poitical activism, social responsibility and the morals of Soviet society. Children were able to join its junior counterpart, the All-Union Pioneer Organisation, from the age of 10; many did so in order to conform to their peers by sporting the red neck scarf. The distinctive salute and motto 'Always Ready!' (Vsegda gotov!) are shown in lot 474. Both organisations were dissolved in 1991.
