Catalogue Note

An innovative and leading figure of the Imperial Russian Ballet, Michel Fokine (1880-1942) debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1898.  Between 1909 and 1912, he choreographed Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris where, despite his unrequited love for her, Fokine worked with Tamara Karsavina in 'The Firebird', in which he danced Prince Ivan as shown in the present lot, and 'Scheherezade', both during the 1910 season.
