Catalogue Note

Evgenii Vakhtangov produced Puccini's optimistic comedy 'Princess Turandot' at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1922.  In 1963 Ruben Simonov revived the play in a new interpretation meant to demonstrate a new direction for theater in the Thaw Period.  Brzhezitskaia was given a spot in the orchestra pit where she could sketch during the performances.  Her composition, showing Vasilii Lanovoi in the role of the Unknown Prince (Calàf) and Vladimir Shlezinger in the role of the Emperor Altoum was based on these sketches.  On Brzhezitskaia's career, see I. Nasonova and S. Nasonov, Asta Brzhezitskaia, Moscow, 2008.
