Catalogue Note
The figure of Belikov, a teacher so fearful of any sort of rule-breaking or permissiveness that he wore galoshes and a heavy coat even in the finest weather, is taken from a series of works by Chekhov. Vorobiev uses the character to mock petty officials in the pre-revolutionary Russian provinces.
