Catalogue Note
The three lots, Festival, Friendship and Planting, were produced to commemorate Moscow's hosting of the 6th World Festival of Youth & Students, a celebration of the Soviet Union's multi-culturalism and increased openness to foreigners during the post-war 'thaw' period.
The Moscow festival was the largest organised in the event's 67 year history and opened on 18 July 1957. The first mass influx of foreigners for over twenty years, around 34,000 young people from 131 different countries attended a fortnight of over 800 events under the banner of 'Peace and Friendship', where the song 'Moscow Nights' (Podmoskovnie vechera) had its international hit debut. The festival's symbol, Picasso's Dove of Peace, can be seen on lot 528. Jazz Musician Alexei Kozlov recalls the event:

"I remember how clutches of people would stand around all night on Gorky Street with a couple of people arguing heatedly about something or other, the rest of them standing round in a tight circle listening, learning and getting used to the whole process involved in the free exchange of ideas."
