Catalogue Note

Sergei Vasilievich Chekhonin (1878-1936), one of the most talented artists of his generation, was also responsible for transforming Soviet ceramic design as a director at the State Porcelain Manufactory in the early days following the revolution.  In 1923 he moved with a group of artists, including Maria Kirillova, to work at a group of factories near Novgorod in order to improve the mass production of Soviet porcelain, often using moulds and models from the Leningrad factory.

The present lot is a rare example of Matveev's innovative and experimental design, enhanced by Chekhonin's abstract decoration, produced in these years.  Inscribed on this lot is the acronym 'NGF', for Novgubfarfor, the sta🍰te-run agency overﷺseeing ceramics factories in the Novgorod region, and 'Volkhov', the abbreviated name of the factory.
