Catalogue Note
Born to a peasant family in the Chervash Republic of the Volga district, Vasilii Ivanovich Chapaev (1887-1919) became a Soviet hero of the Civil War after being elected by his fellow soldiers to command the 138th Infantry Division. As commander of the 25th Rifle Division, he apparently knew no defeat and died from his wounds while crossing the Ural River. His legacy was perpetuated by a 1934 film by the Vasilyev brothers and two books, Chapayev (1923) by Dmitri Furmanov and Chapayev and Void (1996) by Viktor Pelevin. In later years, he became the source of subversive jokes that undermined the official government-sponsored veneration of his name. According to N.S. Petrova (see literature reference), only three examples of this model by Egveniia Krupina were produced.
