Catalogue Note

Mikhail Kalinin (1875-1946) became a central figure of Revolutionary politics through his role on the staff of the Central Union of Metal Workers during the February 1905 Revolution.  At the 8th Congress of the Russian Communist Party in March 1919, he was elected Soviet Head of State, a position he held until his death in 1946.  Although a close ally of Stalin, his own wife was arrested by the NKVD in October 1938 and sent to a labour camp for seven years after confessing to 'counter-revolutionary Trotskyist activities'.  From 17 January 1938 to 19 March 1946, during which time his wife was arrested and imprisoned, he was Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.
