Catalogue Note
In addition to his military career as Commissar of Defence, Kliment Yefremovich Voroshilov (1881-1969) was an important patron of the arts and guardian of official representations of Stalin. Voroshilov commissioned numerous works and visited artists in their studios, correcting them if their work strayed from official canons; see Jan Plamper, The Stalin Cult: A Study in the Alchemy of Power, New Haven, 2012, 145-155.
