Catalogue Note
Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov (1899-1985) and his crew of two flew a Tupolev ANT-25 from Moscow to San Jacinto, California, a distance of 10,148.5 km, on 12-14 July 1937, creating a new world distance record, a feat described on the vase as 'the fulfilment of their Stalinist task'. Their record was broken the following year by a Japanese crew who travelled 11,651 km.
