Catalogue Note
Decorated three times as a Hero of the Soviet Union during the Second World War, Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub (1920-1991) holds the record for the most confirmed air combat victories of any Soviet or Allied pilot during the war. He flew 330 combat missions, most in a Lavochkin La-5, with 120 aerial engagements resulting in 62 enemy aircraft shot down, including a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet. The design of the present lot was most likely executed by Dulevo factory painter Sergei Evstigneevich Medvedev (b. 1928), a member of the Academy of Arts.
