Catalogue Note
Born to a Ukranian peasant family, Vitaly Vasileyevich Fedorchuk (1918-2008) rose to serve as Minister of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union for a single term from 1982 to 1986. He joined the Soviet secret police in 1939 and was an intelligence office in Vienna for 18 years until 1967. Three years later he was appointed Chief of the Ukranian KGB.
