Catalogue Note

His first and only visit abroad, Chairman Mao spent two months in Moscow in December and January 1949-1950. Although the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance & Mutual Assistance was signed, in which the Soviet Union recognised the newly formed People's Republic of China and agreed to loan $300 million, the visit was considered only a mild success. Mao would later describe the visit as "Like taking meat from the mouth of a tiger". Despite arriving in Moscow on the 16th of December, it took until the 2nd January for Stalin to agree to even invite the RPC's Foreign Minister to discuss terms of the Treaty.
