Catalogue Note
Konstantinos Tzanes, born in Rethymno, Crete, lived with his brother Emmanuel in Venice after fleeing from the Turkish conquest of Crete. Fewer icons are recorded by him than his brother, and date between 1670 and 1685. Unlike his brother, who worked in both styles, Konstantinos focused mainly on Western motifs. For further examples of his work, please see Manolis Chatzadakis, Icones de Saint-George des Grecs et de la collection de L'institut, Venice, 1962, nos. 120-123.
