Catalogue Note
This charming and exceptionally large gul–e–bul–bul ('rose and nightingale') painting is the twin composition of another large painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no.1993.98). Whilst the Metropolitan version is executed in a slightly more monochrome, grisaille, technique with a red wash, the present work employs the addition of added colour, particularly to the birds and flowers in the lower half of the painting.
The gul-e-bul-bul style was particular popular amongst European collectors in nineteenth-century Persia, and many objects, paintings and tiles were decorated using this motif. Shiraz was a notable centre of production for such pieces.
