Catalogue Note
This is a rare form in Hispano-Moresque wares. Of the few extant examples, two of the same form as well as decoration are now in the British Museum (inv. no. G.1983.597 and G.1983.602). Stylistically, the cross-hatched panels appear on a number of drug jars, as does the alafia design - "a calligraphic motif consisting of a 'circumflex accent' over an 'alpha' on its side; the Arabic word means 'health and happiness'" (Ray 2000, p. 401).
