of deep rounded form on a short foot, decorated in two shades of blue with a stylised palmette and arabesque symmetrical design on a ground of incised fish-scale petals, the underside a lavender-blue colour with pseudo-Chinoiserie mark to base

Condition

Broken and restored with associated overpainting, design and colour of underside strong, some hairline cracks to glaze, as viewed.

Another Safavid dish with a similar design of scales incised under the glaze, creating a palpable visual effect, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. 890-1876 (illustrated in Melikian–Chirvani 2007, p.349, no. 113). For further examples, see Yolande Crowe's discussion on such dishes in the Victoria and Albert Museum which she describes as having "floral and incised geometry" (in Crowe 2002, pp.124-127).
