Catalogue Note

This grapevine design is traceable to Chinese porcelain, and is generally recognised as one of the great classic patterns of the early Ming dynasty, subsequently influencing the early Iznik potters making blue and white wares in the 1530s and 1540s, and, as in the present example, still resonating with Indian bidri craftsmen in the eighteenth century.

A portable bidri huqqa base with an almost identical design is in the Layla S. and Mahmood Diba Collection, New York (Zebrowski 1997, pp.239-241, no.408)
