Catalogue Note
Originating in South India, this Jadai Nagam would have been worn by Bharatanatyam dancers (the dance of the maid-servants) along their long braid. Depicting Krishna dancing on the head of the king of snakes, Kaaliya, this piece would hold strong ceremonial connotations.
An almost identical Jadai Nagam, with its hanging terminal still intact, is in the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Gerneva (inv. no. 2504-106), illustrated in Krishnan and Kumar 2001, pp.96-7, no.137).
