Catalogue Note

Whilst these chairs cannot be linked to any of the pieces given to Chippendale at Harewood House, the possible connection to the Lascelles family and, indirectly, their seat at Harewood is interesting. This was one of Thomas Chippendales greatest commissions for which he produced outstanding furnishings and several large suites of seat furniture in the ‘French style’. The neat collars, fluted tapering legs and gadrooned feet on the offered lot are devices all employed by the cabinet maker. For chairs which feature similar, see Christopher Gilbert, Thomas Chippendale, New York, 1978, pp. 107-115.
