Description
- Pair of busts of the Vicomte de Turenne and the Comte de Tourville
- bronze, green-brown patina, on gilt metal bases
- After models by Augustin Pajou (1730-1809) and Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) French, circa 1800
the Comte de Tourville with a medal inscribed: R. / D.V. / 1690; and the Vicomte de Turenne numbered: 3 on the underside
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronzes is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surfaces consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the lacquer patina at the high points, including the noses. There are a few minor nicks and scratches, notably to the shoulders and the edges of the truncations. There is a loss to one of the button holes of the comte de Tourville, probably due to an original casting flaw.
The gilt bronze bases are in good condition, with some wear and tarnishing to the gilding. There is particular wear to the gilding on the decorative bronze mounts. There are some minor spots of greening around the bottom of one of the bases. there is minor warping to some of the feet of the bases.

The lifesize statues of Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675) and Anne-Hilarion de Costentin, Comte de Tourville (1642-1701) by Pajou and Houdon are in the Musée national du château de Versailles.
