- After models by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) French, 19th century
together with a French gilt bronze putto holding a torch, circa 1800, on a turned wood socle
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronzes is good, with some dirt and wear to the surfaces consistent with age, including dust in the crevices. There is rubbing to the patina at some of the high points. There is some dark spotting to the patina to the face of the boy with the bird, and there is minor staining to the patina in places, notably at the backs. The join between the child with the bird and its drapery and terrasse is very slightly open.
The condition of the gilt bronze bases is good, with wear and tarnishing consistent with age. There are also several nicks and scratches, and there is a reddish mark to one of the feet. Each base has two small holes to one side.
The gilt bronze putto is in good condition, with dirt and wear consistent with age. There is tarnishing to the gilding throughout. The torch detaches and is slightly warped. The putto's back is patched up with darker-coloured bronze. There is a metal dowel to the bottom which slides into the base. There is some dirt and wear to the base.
