Description
- Pope Pius VI on horseback during the papal cavalcade
- glazed earthenware, on a glazed earthenware base
- Attributed to the Manifattura Cialli Italian, Rome, last quarter 18th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the earthenware group is good, with wear and minor dirt to the surface consistent with age. The proper right front leg of the horse has been reattached and is slightly loose. There are a few minor losses, including to one of the fingers of the proper right hand, and a few chips, notably around the edges of the base. One of the metal reins has detached at the bridle. There are minor losses to the glazing throughout, and some larger losses have been covered with white paint, including: the drapery around the Pope's legs, the brim of the hat, above the horse's proper right eye, the horse's proper left front leg, and the tail. Some craquelure is visible throughout. Several firing fissures are visible underneath the glaze, notably on the terrasse, and to the top and one side of the base.
