Description
- Portrait of Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria (1727–1777), half-length; Portrait of Maria Anna Sophia of Saxony, Electress of Bavaria (1728–1797), half-length
- a pair, both oil on canvas
- 17in by 14in
Both half-length, and in original 18th century painted and carved wood frames
Condition
Both canvases have firm and recent relingings, with resulting flattened paint surfaces. The paint surface in both works is secure and stable, although there is some thinning apparent in the portrait of Maria Anna Sophia, evident in the body and background. The paint surfaces have some surface dirt which should clean. The colours of the figures are rich and vibrant. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish in both pictures. Small, scattered retouchings are visible under ultraviolet light in the body and face of Maria Anna Sophie. There is some minor localised retouching in the face and sleeve of Maximilian., although he is largely free of retouching elsewhere.
Both works are offered in late Baroque style frames, which are possibly original. These frames are gilt molded and painted red and blue. Both have some minor knocks and losses.
