Catalogue Note
These elegant girandoles typify the English neo-classical taste of the late 18th century as promoted by the architect, draftsman and designer Robert Adam (1728-1792). Wall furniture - including girandoles, mirrors, tables and commodes - dominate Adam’s oeuvre in the 1770s and his influence is evident in the present lot, where we see numerous motifs commonly employed by Adam such as the ram’s head masks, classical urns, bell-flower garlands, and the ubiquitous figures of Aphrodite and Athena.
