Condition

The end of the hawk's tail is replaced, tips of both wings restored. The smaller bird's left wing is restored. Typical restoration and chipping to applied leaves. There is some discoloured restoration around edge of base which has started to flake away.

Catalogue Note

The model along with a companion model was created by Kändler in 1734 and 1739; the Taxa for 1734 reads 'Ein Rittelweibgen oder Lerchen Geyer welches vorgestellet in Lebens Größe wie es eine Lerche frißt ruhet auf einem verzierten Postament.' [1 kestrel or lark vulture, depicted life-size, devouring a lark, resting on an ornate pedestal]. The models are illustrated by Karl Albiker, 1959, pls. 86 and 87. Examples of the model were most recently sold from the Property of the Collection of Sir Gawaine and Lady Baillie collection, Sotheby's London, 1st May 2013, lots 5 and 22.
