Catalogue Note
Sir Alfred Hickman, 1st Baronet (July 3, 1830 - March 11, 1910) was an industrialist and a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons between 1885 and 1906. Hickman was created a baronet in 1892. The centerpiece was a gift to his great-grandson Alfred Charles Simonds (1910-1999) in honor of his birth.
The inscription on the stand is an excerpt from Robert Herrick's 17th century poem To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time. First published in 1648 in a volume of verse entitled Hesperides, it is one of the more famous poems to celebrate the concept of carpe diem.
