Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Lonsdale for William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844), who commissioned Robert Smirke to greatly expand Lowther Castle (Westmorland) between 1806 and 1814.  He owned an extensive service of plate, ordered through the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell and dispersed in a series of auctions in 1947.
