Condition

This work is in very good and sound condition overall. The irregularities to the patina appear inherent to the artist’s intent and chosen medium, and the signs of wear to both the work and its base, such as a few white drip accretions and some light rust, are to be expected of a work installed in an outdoor environment. Some dust and fibers have accumulated in the insides of the work.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

"Francis later became interested in Eastern thought and in the spirit of Zen. The writer Alan Watts tells us that 'Zen artists understand better than any others the value of empty spaces, and in a certain sense what they left out was more important than what they put in.' Francis, especially in his later work, has approached a unification of man and the elements which is essential if one is to achieve Satori."
