Condition
This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is unlined. There is evidence of light wear and handling to the edges and corners. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there are two spots at the bottom right corner of the canvas, one approximately 1 inch in diameter and one ½ inch vertical line which fluoresce darkly and appear to be the result of retouching. Framed.

Catalogue Note
“There is stillness about Katz’s work that is difficult to articulate. Looking at one of his portraits is like looking at actors standing still onstage for a few seconds as the curtain rises. If a play begins this way, it is because the frozen moment allows the audience to direct its attention and to get its bearings before the action starts. With Katz’s paintings, the narrative action stays frozen.”
(Anne Beattie, Alex Katz, New York, 1987, p. 13)
