Catalogue Note
Godfrie Poy is recorded as working from 1718-1750. Britten, in Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers, Sixth edition, 1932, mentions a clock by Godfrie Poy that was said to have been made for King George II whilst he was still Prince of Wales. Britten also mentions a further clock by Poy that was amongst the collection of the Tsar of Russia at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.
Henry Manly, active between 1730 and 1760 was a celebrated engraver and chaser. Manly, like his contemporaries, depicted the trope of the Classical Wedding. For a discussion of Manly's work, see Richard Edgcumbe, The Art of the Gold Chaser, pp. 70-73.
