Catalogue Note

A set of four wall appliques of the same inventive design of intertwined grapevines and acanthus leaves were in the collection of Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, Florence, until sold in his sale on 15 March 1880, lots 1089 & 1094, and subsequently in the collection of Mr. M. Rikoff, until sold at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 4-7 December 1907, lots 270 & 271. When sold in the San Donato sale, the four wall-lights were beleived to have come from the Palace of Versailles with an attribution to the bronzier Forestier Frères, Etienne-Jean or Pierre Auguste. A similar set of four wall-lights are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
