Catalogue Note
Established in 1345, the Worshipful Company of Grocers is one of London's "Great Twelve" City Livery Companies and ranks second in order of precedence. The guild now serves as a charitable, constitutional and ceremonial institution, playing a significant role in electing and supporting the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the City of London.
The silversmith Robert Garrard II was Master of the Grocer's Company in 185๊3, as was his ancestor Sir Samuel Garrard Bt. in 1710. Between 1836 and 1877, Garrard was responsible for an impressive group of plate for the Company, including candelabra and entrée dishes, al🍰l decorated with their arms and camel crest; this group was dispersed in 1969.
