Catalogue Note
Toussaint received the Médaille de la Légion d'Honneur in 1852, most probably as a direct result of the present models. The life size originals were commissioned by the French state on 23 February 1850 for the Palais de L'Elysée and first presented in bronze at the Salon in 1850-1851 under the number 3599. Toussaints had shown the plaster models three years earlier under number 2162. With this impressive pair, Toussaint demonstrates his remarkable vision and talent, these are a true tour-de-force of fashionable Far-Eastern elegance.
