Catalogue Note

The arms on one side are those of Burdett-Coutts.  Together with the ducal coronet finials, this suggests that they may have formed part of the extensive collection of plate, "said to be the most valuable of any in the country", that was inherited by the actress Harriet Mellon from her first husband, banker Thomas Coutts; she married as her second husband the young Duke of St. Albans, and Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts was her heir.
